Feeling Good
Feeling Good
By third year Harper Purcell
It’s that time of year again,
And I am feeling good.
School is back in session,
Football is back in season,
friends are back in town,
And I am feeling good.
The days are hot but the nights are fun.
School work hasn't drowned me like it could.
The “still new” shines under the late summer sun.
And I am feeling good.
But it’s almost that time of year again.
The time when It starts.
August will shudder away
September will swiftly depart
The icy winds will send chills my way
And for years, this is when It starts.
The cool weather has always brought numbing
The cold has always turned my eyes dark
I have always watched my life still.
My eyes have seen gray and my ears would feel drumming
The short days will make the cold nights stark
It has always stolen my ability to feel.
With only my overdue assignments piling up
To keep me warm.
And every year
It comes like clockwork
And every year
I brace for Fall’s smirk
Every year
I fear
the chilled air.
But this year, September feels different.
The weather is cool
but not cold and stern
For the first time, my mind clear
I can walk to school
I can talk and learn
I can laugh, without Fall’s sneer
I am feeling good
Fall’s winds do not hold the weight they usually front
I keep wincing for it to hit like it should-
But I keep feeling good.
I am not being choked, but breathing
I am not frozen, but able to move
I am not just here to survive, but living
I am doing more than just scraping by.
It’s that time of year again
But this time, I am feeling good.
