“Yellow Lit Lovers and You”

by zoey stephens

There’s a city filled with young lovers in every lighted window

yellow warmth inside framed by cool blue street lamps shining in

A picture illuminated in a soft sweet glow

True love, or as close as you can get

As you walk down the street while the sun says goodbye

The young lover’s faces are lit up so bright

All you see is their shared intimacy, a touch, a caress

As you pass by pictured windows at the start of the night

A young man places his hand on the waist of his woman

As she turns from the stove to meet his gaze

You watch them kiss and then turn away

Wishing for a windowpaned lover of your own

Maybe not a lover, even just a friend

Someone to light up a window with on a crisp autumn night

Take refuge from the dying light and let yourself entwine

With another human’s warmth, that would be enough

Stand and watch young lovers through their yellow warm windows

As the chill of the cool blue air air kisses your face

Stand and don’t turn away until they close the curtains

And leave you alone with yourself and the sounds of the night

As you leave the city you might notice one still lit window

A girl sits alone wreathed in fairy lights and candle flame swirls

Alone, just as you are, yet still so warm

Maybe the chill is just the air and not solitude at all

It’s easy to feel lonely in a city of lovers, but being alone doesn’t mean that’s your fate

You’ve still got trees and street lamps and cobblestone under your feet

And glass windows show two pictures, the lovers and You

And there’s no prettier picture than one strolling the street.
